Crewe moved into the top three in Sky Bet League Two with a 2-0 away victory at Grimsby thanks to an excellent counter-attacking performance.

Jack Lankester tested Jordan Wright early on, but the Grimsby goalkeeper was able to push his shot away from a tight angle.

Doug Tharme should have put the hosts ahead with a header set up by a perfect out-swinging free-kick from Denver Hume.

Lankester had an even better chance inside the first 25 minutes of the game, but his shot from the centre of the area was poorly hit and comfortably saved by Wright.

The route one approach worked for Crewe in the 56th minute as Lankester sneaked in behind and lobbed Wright, who was unsure whether to come and challenge or stay on his line, with a first-time finish from a long ball forward.

The visitors caught Grimsby on the break again in the 63rd minute, Joel Tabiner having a simple finish after Lankester played him through to put them two goals ahead.
